Shao Mingli, commissioner of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), met on June 12, 2006 with a senior official delegation headed by Neill-Yates, assistant deputy minister of Health Canada Health Products and Food Branch. Mr. Shao and Mr. Neill-Yates exchanged recent regulatory trends in China and Canada. The two sides also discussed their current work and cooperation projects and achievements in the past year, particularly on drug registration, natural health products, biological products, supervision and inspection, adverse event reporting system, medical device supervision and multilateral cooperation mechanism. The two sides negotiated the cooperation plan for 2006 and reached wide consensus. Major leaders and relevant officials of SFDA’s Department of International Cooperation, Department of Drug Registration, Department of Drug Safety & Inspection, Department of Medical Devices, and Department of Personnel & Education attended the meeting and talks.

Based on Cooperation Workplan (1999) and a Supplementary Agreement (2001), SFDA and Health Canada Health Products and Food Branch signed the Plan of Action for Regulatory Cooperation, which is a further intention of both sides to pursue long-term cooperation. The new agreement will promote win-win Sino-Canada cooperation in the field of drug and medical devices.
